Enhancing Digital Accessibility in ILL Scanning: A Practical Approach

From Your RapidILL Working Group

As organizations work toward implementing digital accessibility regulations, one crucial area to address is ensuring that Interlibrary Loan (ILL) scans are accessible to all users. A key solution for this is enabling Optical Character Recognition (OCR) during scanning, allowing text within scanned documents to be searchable and readable by screen readers.

One tool that facilitates this process is the Bookeye scanner, which can be configured to apply OCR to scanned articles automatically. Here’s how to set up OCR within Bscan ILL:

Configuring Bookeye for OCR-Enabled Exports

To ensure that all exported files include OCR functionality, follow these simple steps:

  1. Open the Bscan ILL Settings window.
  2. Navigate to the tab corresponding to your desired export method.
  3. Under “Articles File Format,” select “Searchable PDF” from the dropdown menu.
  4. Click “Apply” to save your changes.

By selecting Searchable PDF as the default file type, all exported documents will automatically include OCR, making them more accessible and user-friendly.

Prioritizing digital accessibility in ILL scanning benefits a wider audience, ensuring that content is available to individuals using assistive technologies. Small steps, like enabling OCR, make a significant difference in promoting inclusivity and compliance with evolving regulations.
