The ELUNA Primo Working Group has been busy this year, advocating for the Primo community, supporting the transition to Primo NDE, and planning for the future. Here’s a quick recap.

Community Engagement and Education

  • Primo Hangouts: These monthly virtual gatherings continue to thrive. The hangouts provide a space for sharing tips, troubleshooting, and discussing Primo customizations. If you haven’t joined yet, come drop in! Sessions are announced on the Primo listserv.

Advocacy and Enhancements

2026 CERV Process: The 2026 Primo Community Enhancement Request Voting (CERV) process was completed in July.  After 2 rounds of voting, the following four proposals received top votes and have been accepted by Ex Libris for inclusion on 2027 Primo development roadmap:

    • PENH-I-28417: Add a persistent top banner controlled via the Discovery menu
    • PENH-I-28428: Add Dark Mode to NDE UI
    • PENH-I-28483: Include Holdings library, location, and call number for physical items in Excel/CSV Export
    • PENH-I-28445: More options for the Quick Filters

Balancing necessary system security responses with community user needs and communication

  • Search Result Offset Limits: Ex Libris imposed Primo search result offset limits on guest users to curtail excessive bot traffic and establish an ongoing safeguard against future abuse. The initial emergency response reduced the guest offset limit to 250; the severity of this restriction presented a serious problem for libraries with heavy guest traffic, and great concern throughout the user community. In response to the advocacy of the WG and members of the Primo community, Ex Libris worked to lessen the impact on users, seeking a better balance of security and usability. In September, the offset limit will be increased from 250 to 500 for guest users, and Libraries will have the option to add CAPTCHA approval to enable guest navigation beyond the offset limit.
  • Email Functionality Changes: Security issues also prompted an emergency change to the email handling methods available to Primo original-UI instances. Primo NDE has supported only client-side processing, using the default email client of the user’s browser or device. Original-UI instances previously had the option to continue using the older server-side system delivery method or switch to client-side; all Primo VE instances were moved to client-side as a mandatory security measure. This change has presented many challenges and pain points. The user must have a default email client configured; emailing of multiple selected records is no longer available; and only the title and link are included in the email, instead of fuller record bibliographic details. Ex Libris continues to investigate possible alternatives for record delivery, with the support of the WG and the community, and with awareness of the need for early communication and community involvement.
