Rapid Cataloging for Inventory Control. Alex Chisum, Head, Cataloging & Metadata Department, Florida State University.
In late 2022, a flood occurred in the subbasement area of Strozier Library at Florida State University, home to thousands of uncataloged special collections materials. In the flood’s aftermath, all subbasement materials were sent to a vendor-operated storage facility out of state, which meant that all uncataloged volumes needed to be described as quickly as possible.
What do you do when your main cataloging priorities become speed and volume? In this presentation, we will discuss the history and evolution of this cataloging workflow; tools and methods used to generate brief Alma records in batch; challenges and limitations of the process; and future applications.
When Moving “The Illiad” Becomes an Odyssey. Carleigh Hill, Library Consortium Services Manager, Washington Community and Technical Colleges Library Consortium; Alisha Stewart, Library Paraprofessional, Yakima Valley College.
When Yakima Valley College librarians decided to reintegrate approximately 500 books from a casual reading collection back into the main stacks, they didn’t know where to start. YVCC staff turned to Consortium Services Manager Carleigh Hill for assistance. What should have been a straightforward Update Item Information job and lots of relabeling turned into a journey through cataloging workflows, Alma configurations, third-party integrations, and countless normalization rule experiments.
Alisha Stewart and Carleigh Hill will share the lessons learned from the moment they discovered local call numbers in the bibliographic classification field to eventually having a mostly automated process for correcting records and moving items. Join us on a journey through MarcEdit, OCLC integrations, Holdings and Items Jobs, the Call Number Mapping Table, adapting normalization rules, and the SpineOMatic Cloud App.
At the time of submission, the project was still in progress, so attendees will have the opportunity to learn along with the presenters.
Linked Data, AI and the Future of Library Metadata. Jill Strykowski, Cataloging & Government Documents Lead, San Jose State University.
The integration of AI tools into societal information retrieval presents a turning point in library discovery. In this presentation, I present the argument for how library metadata transformation into linked data can allow library catalogers to remain relevant as curators of information by adapting existing indexing and descriptive standards for the current era of information technology.
