Rosetta Users Gather in Munich for Discussion and Collaboration

The joint ELUNA/IGeLU Rosetta Product Working Group recently held its annual Rosetta Users Group meeting in Munich, Germany. Hosted by the Bavarian State Library (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek), the meeting brought together 38 in-person attendees and 22 remote participants from 27 institutions for three days of discussion, collaboration, and shared problem-solving.

For the Rosetta community, the Users Group meeting offered a chance to step back from individual institutional workflows and consider how institutional use cases can be shared through collaboration. The central focus of the meeting continues to be engagement with Clarivate staff about Rosetta’s direction, support, and future development, building on priorities identified at the previous meeting in New Zealand.

Users discussed several enhancement proposals with the Rosetta Product Manager Daniel Greenberg and support staff, including ways to deliver digital files while showing their relationship to larger collection structures and reducing the size of Rosetta-generated XML to improve performance for large submissions. These conversations reflected the community’s shared interest in making Rosetta more scalable, efficient, and responsive to institutional needs.

Institutional lightning talks gave participants a brief look at local initiatives, workflows, and projects, encouraging attendees to learn from one another’s successes, challenges, and experiments. Between sessions, attendees received a behind-the-scenes look at the Bavarian State Library and its digital preservation services, as well as a chance to partake in the cuisine and beverages that make Munich famous.

The three-day meeting concluded with a hackathon that emphasized hands-on collaboration and practical problem-solving. During the session, users shared troublesome files for triage, assisted with updates to metadata extractors used by Rosetta, and exchanged custom scripts and tools developed to support day-to-day work. The collaborative format of the Rosetta Users Group meeting is always geared toward giving participants a chance to move from discussion to action, working together on concrete issues that affect preservation workflows across institutions.
