Build a Better Query: Crafting Effective Searches and Recommendations in Rialto. Jennifer Cornell MLIS, Content & Workflow Strategy Consultant, Clarivate; Nathaniel Gray MLIS, Senior Content & Workflow Strategy Consultant, Clarivate (Platinum Sponsor).

The query builder is foundational to the Rialto selection process, serving as a robust and versatile tool that empowers libraries to tailor title recommendations to their specific needs. Whether your goal is to stay informed about the latest publications in designated subject areas, discover the most recent editions with ease, or define parameters for Demand-Driven Acquisitions (DDA) pools—the query builder is designed to handle it all. This session will provide a deep dive into the query builder, offering tips for building successful queries for advanced searches as well as creating title alerts, recommendation feeds, and selection plans. At the end of this session, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of how to utilize the query builder to achieve desired outcomes and support their unique collection strategy.

“Why Are We Doing Things This Way?”. Amanda Echterling, Head of Resource Acquisition & Metadata Services, Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries; Mary Beth Holm, Electronic Resources Librarian, Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries; Tom McNulty, Head of Library Technology, Operations and Design, Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries; Tim Siegel, Enterprise Systems Librarian, Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries.

Over time, seemingly small workflow decisions can add up to large-scale roadblocks to change. As new team members are onboarded, inevitably it will be asked “Why are we doing things this way?” While this question sometimes can be answered easily, other times it can’t. In this presentation, we’ll explore experiences from a range of departments throughout the library, from rethinking electronic resource management workflows, addressing vendor and staffing changes, to re-evaluating the use of work orders, fulfillment units, and item requesting. We will discuss strategies, tools, and methods for evaluating and improving workflows in multiple areas of Alma to show how to get on the fast lane to more efficient, user-friendly workflows.

“But We’ve Always Done It This Way”: Strategies in Enacting Change in Technical Services. Rich Wisneski, Electronic Resources Librarian, Miami University.

Oftentimes when academic libraries undergo a reorganization or a newly hired academic librarian is asked to institute a change, change can be met with resistance. The line “But we’ve always done it this way” as a rebuttal can be perceived by those assigned to enact change as an opportunity, a point of frustration, or both. This presentation will address the challenges academic librarians can face when trying to enact change, and some strategies to employ in the face of resistance. Having worked at several academic libraries over the course of my career, I will share experiences I have encountered and strategies in enacting change. Included will be approaches to enacting change, built around examples of leading projects to migrate to a new ILS system and Discovery Layer. Participants will learn ways to form working groups, propose projects, manage group projects, and create buy-in from constituents within and outside technical services
