We are seeking a Cataloging and Metadata Specialist to work as part of the Carnegie Mellon University Libraries Resource and Discovery Services (RADS) Department. This is a unique opportunity to expand expertise in the areas of cataloging and metadata to improve access to the library’s physical and electronic resources. Reporting to the head of RADS, you will contribute to the department by providing original and complex cataloging, metadata description, and record maintenance for all formats of library resources. You will also collaborate across library departments as needed to consult on metadata issues, and help to identify and coordinate projects to improve the currency, accuracy, and interoperability of the library’s metadata.
Core responsibilities include:
-Provide original and complex copy cataloging for all physical formats of library materials using MARC, AACR2, RDA, Library of Congress (LC) Classification, LC Subject Headings, and other relevant resources and standards
-Work with the department’s cataloging Library Specialist to coordinate and optimize cataloging workflows
-Coordinate and assist with special projects involving cataloging, database maintenance, and non-MARC metadata in collaboration with colleagues in RADS and other library departments
-Assist with the management of the library’s electronic resource inventory, troubleshooting discovery and access issues
-Coordinate the maintenance and enhancement of the library’s authority records, creating new authority records as needed
-Assist with efforts to align the library’s descriptive practices with local priorities and evolving best practices for diversity, equity, and inclusion
-Participate in testing and implementing new collections, features, and configurations for the library’s discovery tool, Primo
