An Introduction to Alma Data Visualization. Emily Nilson, Database Integrity & Analysis Specialist, George Mason University Libraries.

Ex Libris’ Data Visualization (DV) tool offers powerful functionality and significant potential for streamlining data processing for everyone from Analytics beginners to super users. However, this potential is hidden behind its perception as a tool primarily for making graphs.
This session is an overview of the DV UI and functionality including the creation of data sets, graphs, data flow automation, and joins without writing SQL. We’ll discuss where the tool shines and its limitations. It is a fast-paced overview live in DV. The accompanying slides will include a video recording of the presentation so that attendees can re-watch desired sections. Presentation materials will also include a bibliography of documentation sources. By the end, audience members will have the foundation to customize Data Visualization workbooks and explore potential functionality for their institution.

The Right Set Up: Choosing Alma, Analytics, or Data Visualization for Data Work. Kim Edwards, Head, Database Integrity & Analysis, George Mason University Libraries; Emily Nilson, Database Integrity & Analysis Specialist, George Mason University Libraries.

Alma, Analytics, and Data Visualization all allow data queries and the export of data. However, it is often difficult to know which tool is optimal for a data need. This presentation examines the distinct functionalities within Alma, Analytics, and Data Visualization to access and process data, situations in which each functionality shines, and how they can be linked together to achieve tasks no one tool can manage. We begin with an overview of the possibilities unique to each tool and where they overlap. We then examine ways to use the tools together, such as getting around the 9,999 filter limit in Analytics by uploading a list in Data Visualization.

Showcasing Data with Widgets and Dashboards: Making Analytics Data More Accessible for Alma Users. Mary Tuttle, Subject Librarian, Binghamton University.

Many of us already open our Alma homepage at least once per day; why not make it a more informative (and exciting) landing page? By customizing your homepage with widgets or data visualization dashboards, you can save yourself time and clicks by making Analytics data more easily accessible to you and the non Analytics users in your library. This presentation will walk through adding Analytics data and visualizations to your (and others’) personal Alma homepage: both making charts and graphs in Analytics and turning those visuals into widgets, as well as using the Data Visualization tool to make similar charts and graphs that can be added as your Alma homepage, as well.
