This position will work closely with the Library’s Special Collections and FIT Archive which fosters original research across and beyond the FIT community.
Position Summary
PURPOSE & DESCRIPTION OF JOB
The Cataloging & Metadata Librarian performs original and complex cataloging and metadata description in all formats to enhance the discovery of our collections, with a special emphasis on our unique print collections. The position works collaboratively with other library faculty and staff in the creation, organization, and maintenance of metadata, and provides guidance and training on best practices. Reports to the Head of Acquisitions & Metadata Services and collaborates with the Library’s Special Collections and FIT Archive unit.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Cataloging Collections Oversight
Provide oversight on cataloging practices; perform and advise on best practices for all types of cataloging.
Perform original and complex copy cataloging for monographs, serials, and Special Collections and College Archives (SPARC) materials (e.g. fashion illustration collections, scrapbooks, college archives)
Provide oversight and documentation of archival cataloging and processing projects to ensure effective metadata creation, authority control and system integration across diverse collections
Maintain currency with emerging current national and international standards for cataloging, archival description and metadata
Develop and implement reporting strategies within the library services Platform and other management systems; produce reports in response to specific requests
Manage and delegate gift book donations, overseeing initial donor correspondence, vetting and acceptance workflows, and final cataloging into the collection
Cataloging Managerial Oversight
Conduct training and provide oversight; guidance to library staff performing copy cataloging or metadata activities
Develop, implement, and maintain workflows, procedures, and documentation for cataloging/metadata management
Institutional Flexibility & Special Assignments
Cross-Library Work:
In addition to regular library service desk assignments, service at any library service desk for coverage is required as needed. This position may work in various capacities outside of the home unit to accomplish library-wide initiatives.
Special Assignments:
Duties vary depending on time-sensitive initiatives. These may include activities such as new outreach campaigns to academic departments, development of peer training, data migration, web content development, information architecture, grant proposals, and others as needed.

Library Professional Competencies
Liaison, Outreach, and Collection Cultivation
Serve as the primary contact for assigned academic departments, providing guidance on specialized resources.
Select materials and evaluate resources (databases, periodicals, research materials) in assigned subject areas.
Actively participate in marketing library services and creating connections with classroom faculty and student organizations.
Leadership & Initiative
Lead relevant library teams, task forces, and ad hoc groups as needed to achieve unit or library-wide goals.
Drive the planning, implementation, and execution of specialized projects, ensuring alignment with the library’s strategic priorities.
Participate in mentoring programs for new librarians and colleagues across the library, sharing subject matter expertise.
Faculty Responsibilities and Professional Development
Participate in library-wide meetings, governance, and campus-wide committees to support the College Strategic Plan.
Maintain active membership in professional organizations and stay current with trends in pedagogy, technology, and library services.
Required Qualifications
Qualifications & Knowledge
Master’s degree in library science, information science, or a related field.
Minimum of three (3) years post-credentialed professional experience in cataloging and metadata
Experience with principles of authority control, including selecting and applying controlled vocabularies and ontologies to local collections
Skills
Proficiency with AACR2, RDA, LC Classification and LC subject headings, and MARC 21 format
Demonstrated currency of MARC and non-MARC metadata formats standards and schema
Experience with tools such as OCLC Connexion, MarcEdit, and Open Refine as applied to original and complex copy cataloging
Abilities
Proven ability and excellent organizational skills to produce complex, analytical and detailed work products
Possess strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated ability to present and convey concepts and information to groups with varying levels of technical comprehension
Capacity to lead projects; demonstrated ability and flexibility to work with emerging and concurrent priorities; resourceful in problem solving and resolution
Proven ability to work independently and in a collegial, teamwork-oriented environment
Record of providing outstanding customer service to library patrons
Demonstrated commitment to fostering a culturally diverse educational and work environment
Preferred Qualifications
Qualifications & Experience
Demonstrated professional original cataloging and metadata experience in an academic or research library
Demonstrated experience cataloging archival or rare materials
Demonstrated experience cataloging serials
Demonstrated experience working in an Alma/Primo VE environment
Demonstrated supervisory experience
