Report from Linked Open Data Community of Practice Working Group

The Linked Open Data Community of Practice Working Group is a joint ELUNA and IGeLU group. Besides sharing information on the group’s listserv, the group regularly holds virtual community meetings. The most recent meeting highlighted two institutions’ experiences with Sinopia (a linked data editor) and working with BIBFRAME data in the Alma Sandbox. A recording of that session, along with all others since 2020, can be accessed via the group’s Event page.

One of the ongoing tasks the group takes on is to monitor the status of the new linked data features developed by Ex Libris and to consolidate all relevant information in our Dashboard – Linked Data Development in Ex Libris Products. In addition, we also test newly released linked data features.

Recently, some institutions reported that the Alma Refine cloud app for service ORCID did not retrieve any data from ORCID using ORCID Public API. We investigated the issues and found out that this function only works via ORCID Member Production API. ORCID had concerns about issuing credentials for Ex Libris institutions to use this API since the API is intended for research authentication purposes and not for ORCID ID lookup. Ex Libris met with ORCID in early January to discuss these concerns. ORCID agreed to develop a new tool that will work for Alma Refine but will not issue Member Production API credentials for the use of Alma Refine for now.

To help Ex Libris to develop the linked data products/services that meet your needs, we have been collecting User Stories/Use cases. If you have ideas or user stories, please submit them using the Google form and/or using Alma Idea Exchange (selecting Linked Data from the Category dropdown menu). We need your input! Please help shape the future.
