DESCRIPTION
The Metadata Services program connects our community to intellectual and creative content by analyzing, describing and organizing resources in ways that promote discovery. We create and manage metadata for tangible resources and digital objects, with special attention to materials unique to UC San Diego, its interests, and its context. The program includes approximately 30 FTE staff. The Special Collections Cataloging and Metadata Unit, within Metadata Services, provides cataloging of Special Collections & Archives (SC&A) materials and physically works in SC&A.

Reporting to the head of the Special Collections Metadata Unit the incumbent will spend 55% of their time performing original and complex enhanced cataloging of material in all formats (including rare books and manuscripts) for Special Collections & Archives in Spanish and other languages and 45% of their time cataloging Spanish language materials for the circulating collection. The position is required to use advanced professional library concepts and objectives to resolve highly complex issues. Duties and assignments are defined by overall objectives and involve a high level of complexity in functional and subject area specialization as well as coordination. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Work is performed independently under general consultative leadership.

The Spanish Language Metadata Specialist has primary responsibility for original and complex enhance cataloging of Spanish language and other special collections materials in all subject areas and all formats (print, electronic, and digital, as well as audio and video resources). This position will assign metadata and controlled subject terms for Spanish language digital library collections and exhibits, plan and implement projects involving data analysis and manipulation, explore and determine the most effective strategies and apply batch techniques when applicable. This position is also responsible for maintaining the accuracy of the UC San Diego Library online catalogs for Spanish and other languages by performing data maintenance on bibliographic, holdings, item, and authority records.

Must have the ability to read and write in Spanish in order to perform job duties.

This position offers a hybrid work arrangement, which includes 3-4 days on site and one to two days of remote work. During an initial training period all work will be performed onsite.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency in Spanish language, including being able to read and write in Spanish
  • Working knowledge of the rules and tools (e.g. RDA, the DCRM suite, MARC, etc.) relevant to cataloging library resources (including special collections materials) and the ability to apply them sufficient to perform original, enhanced, and complex cataloging and resolve cataloging discrepancies and problems.
  • Working knowledge of controlled vocabularies for subjects and genres (e.g. LCSH, LCGFT, etc.) and the Library of Congress Classification System sufficient to analyze the form and content of materials and assign headings and classification numbers as needed.
  • Working knowledge of the rules and structures of authority and identity management metadata sufficient to evaluate, update, and create such metadata as needed.
  • Demonstrated communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to convey critical timelines and technical issues, and solutions.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, ability to set and maintain priorities, meet deadlines, perform tasks with accuracy and attention to details, and meet quality and quantity standards.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills to address highly complex or specialized solutions.

Hiring pay scale: $23.42 – $36.21/hour
